In a paper to appear in the August 2015 edition of Accident Analysis & Prevention, a team of researchers, which includes EBPI professors Torsten Hothorn and Leonard Held, analyzed over 1 million traffic accidents occurring in Bavaria between 2002 and 2011. As reported recently in the Süddeutsche Zeitung, their analysis indicates that deer-related activity (i.e., density of deer based on season, time of day) rather than human-related activity, was the primary driver of accidents. The paper suggests that roadway managers and wildlife authorities may use this information to develop more effective driver warning mechanisms.
