Extended-Spectrum Cephalosporin and/or Colistin-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae in Swiss Travellers to Tanzania and Laos, in the Local Population, in Broiler Chicken and in Chicken Meat

International travel is a known risk factor for becoming colonized with antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract. While certain risk factors for becoming colonized are known (travelling destination, suffering from travellers’ diarrhoea and taking antibiotics while travelling), the exact mechanism of how people become colonized remains unclear. To learn more about the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria at the human-to-human as well as the animal-to-human interface we carry out this study comparing antibiotic-resistant bacteria found in the gut of returning travellers, of the local population and of local chicken as well as in chicken meat.
